The Real Meaning of Revolution

Recently, I discovered the real meaning of revolution.

The word revolution is often perceived as the fight for change.

Throughout the history, revolution like the French revolution, American revolution and the Chinese Xinhai Revolution brought change to the respective countries and the world.

However this change also brought sweat, blood and toils to the people. Many lives had been taken in the name revolution.

The real meaning of revolution should be about LOVE  not hatred.

True revolution inspires people to LOVE human beings. Spreading universal benevolence and world peace.

Like what Jesus said, “Love thy neighbour as thyself”

The Buddha said, “Mitri or metta” which is universal love. The love of all.

This type of LOVE is not emotional but a rational, humanistic and civilized thought.

Let’s embrace the true meaning of rEVOLution

Be A Leader Not A Boss

This morning I went to the Sentul Buddhist temple and I saw this on the notice board:

THE BOSS DRIVES HIS MEN;

THE LEADER INSPIRES THEM

THE BOSS DEPENDS ON AUTHORITY;

THE LEADER ON GOODWILL.

THE BOSS EVOKES FEAR;

THE LEADER RADIATES LOVE

THE BOSS SAY “I”

THE LEADER SAYS “WE”

THE BOSS SHOWS WHO IS WRONG;

THE LEADERS SHOWS WHAT IS WRONG.

THE BOSS KNOWS HOW IT IS DONE;

THE LEADER SHOWS HOW TO DO IT.

THE BOSS ABUSES MEN;

THE LEADER USES THEM.

THE BOSS DEMANDS RESPECT;

THE LEADER COMMANDS RESPECT.

THE BOSS MAKES WORK DRUDGERY;

THE LEADER MAKES IT FINE

It is true indeed that we need more leaders than bosses nowadays.

Feed Your Mind Good Stuff

What do you do everyday to feed your mind good stuff?

James Allen, author of the book “As A Man Thinketh” put it best when he wrote, “We may imagine that thought can be kept secret, but it cannot; it rapidly crystallizes into habit, and habit solidifies into circumstance.” You think, you act, and your action create a series of events that shape your day-to-day life.

Feeding your mind good stuff has been the key module for all programs in Edu Action.

It is the most powerful thing to grow yourself in whatever you set out to do.

As you are reading the Facebook post, watching TV, reading the newspaper. Be careful what you are feeding your mind. Subliminal negative messages influence you unconsciously.

A very easy way to feed your mind good stuff is to consciously think good thoughts.

My favourite is, “May all beings be well and happy”. This thought when constantly think off, calms the mind & relax the body.It is also wholesome as you are sending good energy to people, making it easy for you to connect with people and soothe things out.

From an IT Analyst to “Char Koay Teow” Seller

I was reading Seth Godin’s book The Icarus Deception: How High Will You Fly.

The book is about the idea of Icarus’s father made him wings and told him not to fly too close to the sun; he ignored the warning and plunged to his doom. The lesson: Play it safe. Listen to the experts. It was the perfect propaganda for the industrial economy. What boss wouldn’t want employees to believe that obedience and conformity are the keys to success?

I felt the urge to write something on the people that I know off who really valued “The Icarus Deception.”

I have high school mates, friends and relatives who quit their 9 to 5 job, as a school teacher, as  IT specialist, as a doctor and started to venture into parents-would-not-agree-jobs like real estate agents, diving instructor, wedding emcee, graphic designer, tuition teachers, Buddhist monk & “char koay teow” seller. For one reason, for the freedom of time, politics & bureaucracy .

They struggled at first but with vision & perseverance, they managed to do very well and now they are enjoying the freedom they are looking for. They shared the common feeling. It was scary at first but I did not regret coming out.

To all these people. I salute you and keep on challenging the status quo, debunk the need to be obedience and conform. Keep on flying.

For those of you who wish to fly. Just do it. The biggest risk is not to take risk.

I wish you all the best.

*Char Koay Teow is the Penang famous Hawker food.

How to Apply Team Building Skills at Work?

I used to get this question from my customers, “Your team building program is good. The people enjoyed themselves and they bonded well. The question is how can we apply the team building skills learnt at work?”

Here are my answers:

  1. Treat everyday at work as if you are attending a team building program – Have Fun
  2. Create a group cheer/ war cry. Shout it out before and end of every meeting – I have seen Domino’s Pizza did it to energize the people before and after the meeting.
  3. Give your project team a team name which is funny, motivating & easy to remember- Example: High flyers, Blue Bird or Green Pussy (real team names given in my team building program)
  4. Select a leader and rotate the role.
  5. Leader to brief on goals and task allocation.
  6. Select a person to play the role as the General Evaluator to give feedback and debrief after every meeting/ project/task
  7. Celebrate small successes by having a “makan-makan” session

Eager vs Willing

eagermeter

The difference between a great team and an ordinary team is the EAGERNESS to help and support each other.

What is the difference between willing and eager? Willing is when you asked your son (take for example) to clean up the room or else no dinner. He will be willing to do the task because he wanted to eat. Of course there will be no eagerness there. Eagerness is the passion, the energy, the enthusiastic and the persistence to carry out the task.

The role of a coach, manager or leader is to get all team members to move from the average willing to the champion eager on the eager meter. The moment you hit the champion eager, you will see your team in PASSION, PERSISTENCE & PERFORMANCE.
